Internal Medicine with Dr. Erica Queen and Dr. Polina Vishkautsan

Pets are often referred to veterinary internal medicine specialists, or veterinary internists, for particularly challenging or difficult disease conditions, since these specialists have an unmatched understanding of the body’s internal systems. If reaching a diagnosis is proving challenging, or treatment is not producing the desired results, your veterinarian may refer you to a veterinary internist. Our internal medicine team will work with your family veterinarian to get to the bottom of your pet’s complex medical condition, using advanced diagnostic testing and equipment. Led by Dr. Queen and Dr. Vishkautsan, our internal medicine team focuses on providing high-quality, comprehensive, and compassionate care.

What is internal medicine?

Internal medicine encompasses the diagnosis and management of a wide range of disorders, such as:

  • Infectious diseases
  • Hormonal diseases
  • Immune disorders
  • Gastrointestinal conditions

  • Urinary diseases
  • Pancreatic diseases
  • Liver diseases
  • Respiratory disorders

Our internal medicine service works closely with our emergency, oncology, and surgery services, allowing for ongoing consultation on difficult cases or transfers for ongoing care. Common Internal Medicine Questions

Veterinary internists are experienced in using a variety of advanced diagnostic tools and equipment to diagnose complex conditions. An endoscope is used to visualize structures of the intestinal, respiratory, and urogenital tract, and nasal passages, and to obtain biopsies or remove foreign objects. This minimally invasive tool allows procedures that may otherwise require surgery to be performed quickly and easily, with minimal recovery time and hospitalization.

  • Rhinoscopy
  • Laryngoscopy
  • Tracheoscopy
  • Bronchoscopy
  • Esophagoscopy
  • Foreign Body Removal
  • Gastroduodenoscopy
  • Colonoscopy
  • Proctoscopy
  • Cystoscopy
  • Vaginoscopy

  • Internal medicine consultation
  • Imaging, including radiography (X-rays), ultrasound scans, CT scans, and fluoroscopy
  • Diagnostic and therapeutic abdominocentesis, thoracocentesis, and pericardiocentesis
  • Fine needle aspiration
  • Biopsies (e.g., needle, ultrasound-guided, and surgical biopsies)
  • Bronchoalveolar lavage
  • Tracheal wash
  • Arthrocentesis
  • Feeding tube placement

  • Immune mediated (i.e., auto-immune) conditions, such as immune-mediated hemolytic anemia (IMHA), and immune-mediated thrombocytopenia (ITP)
  • Inflammatory conditions, such as pancreatitis, hepatitis, and bronchitis
  • Liver shunts
  • Tick-borne diseases (e.g., Lyme disease)
  • Infectious diseases (e.g., leptospirosis)
  • Diabetes mellitus
  • Cancer (e.g., lymphoma, melanoma)

A number of complex disorders may present as some of the diseases mentioned above, and can be difficult to manage without consulting a specialist. In some cases, an incorrect diagnosis may reduce the likelihood of long-term recovery or survival.
